Animal Feed

NSF International provides a comprehensive range of auditing and certification services to help your organization create safe, high-quality animal feed and pet food products. As the first link in the supply chain, feed is a cornerstone in farm-to fork food safety. NSF offers a complete supply chain management program that covers all stages from primary production to manufacturing to distribution. At an industry level, it is important to ensure feed quality and safety by mitigating risk factors throughout your entire supply chain.

NSF helps to ensure that companies throughout the supply chain are well prepared to meet the new FSMA animal feed requirements, as well as able to stay competitive in a global marketplace.

NSF offers several food safety certifications for the animal feed industry.

Safe Feed/Safe Food

Safe Feed/Safe Food is a certified audit specifically developed by American Feed Industry Association and Safe Quality Food (SQF) Institute. It can be a stand-alone audit or completed as an addendum with the SQF FSC 32 or 34 audit. By demonstrating compliance with safe feed best practices, these certifications can help reduce product liability and minimize brand reputation risks. We additionally offer the National Renderer’s Association audit.

FSSC 22000 (PAS 222)

This GFSI-benchmarked standard verifies the safety and quality of animal feed processing, transportation and on-site storage systems. It is based on ISO 22000 and other requirements such as input management. LEARN MORE ABOUT FSSC 22000 (PAS 222)

This comprehensive standard is GFSI benchmarked, covering all inputs and aspects of feed and ingredients. It is globally recognized and provide levels that allow for continuous improvement in companies of all sizes. The certification can be combined with other modules to cover manufacturers of animal feed, pet food manufacturing facilities and food ingredient facilities. There is also an ethical sourcing module. LEARN MORE ABOUT SQF

ISO 22000

This certification demonstrates that a food safety management system based on prerequisite programs, HACCP and GMP principles is in place.

GMP+ Feed

This scheme is for the certification of feed companies active in the global feed chain.

It consists of two modules:

GMP+ Feed Safety Assurance (GMP+ FSA)

Developed to guarantee feed safety and to reassure consumers about the responsible way animal feed products are produced, processed, traded, stored and transported.

GMP+ Feed Responsibility Assurance (GMP+ FRA)

This certification demonstrates responsible production and trade, with the main goal to facilitate GMP+ participants in meeting market requirements for responsibly produced feed.

Non-GMO Transparency

NSF offers two types of non-GMO certification. Non-GMO Project is North America’s only independent verification for products made according to best practices for GMO avoidance and one of the most widely recognized and respected marks in its category. NSF Non-GMO True North was created to assure the integrity of GMO claims and to grow the breadth and diversity of non-GMO/GE verified products sold at retail, and non-GMO certified ingredients sold throughout the supply chain. True North incorporates elements from the EU and Vermont GMO labeling requirements and pulls best practice from commonly used leading food safety standards. LEARN MORE ABOUT NON-GMO TRANSPARENCY

FSMA Readiness Audit

In response to the FSMA regulations, NSF International developed the FSMA Readiness Audit for the Feed Industry.

This independent, third-party audit assesses your business against the FSMA requirements to help prepare for an FDA inspection. The one-day audit takes a preventative and risk-based approach in assessing your company’s facilities and operating procedures. The first half of the audit assesses cGMP requirements that specifically address the manufacturing, processing, packing and holding of animal feed and feed ingredients. The second half of the audit looks at the operation’s food safety plan, which includes a hazard analysis and risk-based preventive controls for mitigating those hazards.

FSMA readiness is essential to the success of your feed business in this new regulatory environment.

Benefits of Certification

Having a strong food/feed safety program demonstrates a commitment to operational excellence. Certification and auditing practices drive consistency, thus reducing and eliminating errors. They can serve as a form of assurance to your customers that you are in compliance with quality and safety requirements/standards based on industry best practices. At times the motivator might be driven by satisfying regulatory or customer requirements, but the result is a positive outcome for an organization or brand and can contribute results to your bottom line.
