NSF is bringing assurance to the textile industry.
With rising consumer demands for more authentic sustainably-sourced materials, our portfolio of certification offerings can help organizations demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and traceability. Our certifications include Global Traceable Down Standard, Responsible Down Standard, Responsible Wool Standard, Organic Content Standard, Recycled Claim Standard and Global Recycled Standard.
NSF’s independent, third-party validation of textile content claims can support and protect your brand by demonstrating your commitment to sustainability and traceability, as well as strengthen customer trust in farm and animal welfare-related product claims.
Through farm and supply chain audits, certification assures your customers that the products they buy are coming from ethical and responsible sources, with full traceability all the way through the supply chain.
A third-party audit and compliance program can help mitigate risk and expand market acceptance of your products, and also provide a manageable process and system for certification. If your organization is part of a textile or apparel supply chain, certification can help you prove your commitment to responsible farming practices, animal welfare, sustainability and traceability. At the retail level, certification informs and assures customers that the products they purchase are made only from responsible sources.
Organizations looking for a traceability verification of specific materials in a final product can benefit from the Textile Exchange’s Content Claim Standard (CCS). A chain of custody standard, CCS was designed to ensure the authenticity of content claims by requiring supply chains to take steps that ensure preservation of the integrity and identity of the input material, providing manufacturers, brands, retailers, traders and organizations supporting specific raw material initiatives a strong chain of custody system from source to final product.
The CCS serves as the chain of custody foundation for other content claim standards. This common set of requirements across Textile Exchange’s standards contributes to the consistency and efficiency of the certification process. The standard can be used with any input material and can apply to any supply chain. Once a company has been certified to the CCS requirements for one standard, it meets the same chain of custody requirements for other standards based on the CCS, like the Recycled Claim Standard and Organic Content Standard.
Traceable and Responsible Down
NSF certifies to both the Global Traceable Down Standard (Global TDS), developed by NSF International, and the Textile Exchange’s Responsible Down Standard (RDS), which ensures that down in garments and other household and commercial products comes from a responsible source that respects animal welfare and can be transparently traced.
While the overall goal of both standards is to ensure that down comes from a responsible source that respects animal welfare, such as prohibiting live-plucking and force-feeding, there are some minor differences. NSF can help you identify which service is right for your needs.
Certifying to the Global TDS or RDS means that you are committed to the best waterfowl welfare practices.
The Textile Exchange’s Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) addresses the welfare of sheep and land management practices, prohibiting cruelty practices such as mulesing and tail docking. Certification to the RWS ensures that wool from certified farms is properly identified and tracked from farm to retail.
The RWS provides a consumer-facing certification mark and identifies permitted labeling language for products and organizations to communicate their certification to customers.
Differentiate your brand and products with the RWS by validating your commitment to best practices in sheep welfare and land stewardship.
NSF can verify recycled content claims against two standards. Claims of recycled content can be difficult to gauge, as the definition can encompasses both pre-consumer and post-consumer waste. NSF can help distinguish company claims on recycled content, aiding in building brand and product distinction. By protecting the trust of consumers as they choose products made of verified recycled materials, you can contribute to the increased use of recycled content and to the reduction of the amount of reclaimable material sent to landfills or incineration.
The Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) verifies the presence and amount of recycled material in a final product through chain of custody verification, utilizing the chain of custody requirements of the Textile Exchange’s Content Claim Standard (CCS).
The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is a more holistic certification for products with recycled content, verifying both the product’s recycled content as well as responsible social, environmental and chemical practices implemented during production.
NSF can help you identify which service is right for your needs.
The Organic Content Standard (OCS) provides third-party verification of organic material content in a product. After raw material is certified as organic, the OCS tracks the use of organic content throughout processing and manufacturing activities. The result is that the organic content integrity is maintained from farm to retail.
The OCS provides a consumer-facing certification mark and identifies permitted labeling language for products and organizations to communicate their certification to customers. Consumers can trust OCS certified product claims.
