NSF Food Safety Certification, LLC is accredited to certify to the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) standards which address environmental and social responsibility, animal welfare, food safety and traceability for aquaculture facilities. BAP certification defines the most important elements of responsible aquaculture and provides quantitative guidelines by which to evaluate adherence to those practices.
The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA), a non-profit non-governmental organization founded in 1997, develops the BAP certification standards and encourages responsible aquaculture practices. GAA also works to improve production and marketing efficiencies, and to promote effective, coordinated regulatory and trade policies.

The BAP program outlines standards for each type of facility, from hatchery and feed mill to farm to processing plant. It currently certifies shrimp farms and hatcheries; salmon, tilapia, channel catfish and Pangasius farms; seafood processing plants and feed mills.
Certification to a GFSI recognized standard such as BAP increases brand protection and minimizes risk. Achieving NSF certification to a BAP standard provides independent certification that a product or process complies with specific international standards and enables a food supplier to give assurances that food has been produced, prepared and handled according to the most recognized standards.

The BAP certification process follows five basic steps:
1. Your facility/operation reviews standards, guidelines and the certification application form.
2. You return the completed application form to BAP headquarters.
3. Upon application approval, BAP assigns an accredited BAP certification body to your facility
4. The certification body inspects your facility/operation.
5. Following successful inspection and any corrective active resolutions, BAP certification is granted.
To maintain BAP certification, an annual compliance verification inspection must be conducted.
